The Western monarch butterflies are returning to Southern California, and that’s cause for celebration at Kidspace!

Butterfly Season highlights include bug safaris around the Kidspace campus, create-a-caterpillar art projects, butterfly-themed fantasy dress-up and play, and "flower showers" to help flowers grow.

This year there is a new interpretation of artist Christopher Lutter’s handmade Monarch butterflies, crafted from upcycled waste-stream materials.

Butterfly Season also brings back Los Trompos, an interactive art installation designed by Héctor Esrawe and Ignacio Cadena. These brightly colored structures, inspired by vintage Mexican toy tops, invite guests to hop on and spin together, embodying the cultural and geographical connections between California and Mexico - connections that are deeply tied to the Monarch butterfly’s migratory journey.

And no butterfly season would be complete without caterpillars!  Kids can adopt their very own caterpillars to take home.

For $8, kids receive a caterpillar, its food, and care guide, as well as the adoption certificate to name the caterpillar.  Over the following couple of weeks, kids observe as their caterpillar goes through the stages of metamorphosis, ultimately emerging as a beautiful Painted Lady Butterfly.  Caterpillar adoptions are available onsite through the Kidspace store or online. All caterpillars must be picked up in person at the museum. (Caterpillars available while supplies last).
