1. See Alligators in the Wild

One of the most exciting reasons to visit Brazos Bend with kids? The alligators! The park’s swampy terrain and lakes are home to these fascinating reptiles, which you can often see basking near the water. It’s a great way to see alligators near Houston in a safe, natural setting—just be sure to observe from a distance and follow park safety rules.

2. Stroll the Creekfield Lake Trail

Perfect for younger kids, the Creekfield Lake Trail is a half-mile, wheelchair- and stroller-accessible loop with interpretive signs, a boardwalk, and plenty of wildlife spotting opportunities. This easy path is a must for families with toddlers or those looking for a short, scenic walk.

3. Take on the Elm Lake Loop

For older kids who love to explore, the 1.7-mile Elm Lake Loop Trail is a bit more of an adventure. You'll walk around a beautiful lake that's often teeming with birds, turtles, and yes—more alligators. Don’t forget the binoculars! If you’re looking for an alternative trail, there are over 37 miles, so you’re spoiled for choice!

4. Join a Ranger Program

Brazos Bend offers fantastic family-friendly ranger-led programs throughout the year, from guided hikes to wildlife talks and night sky explorations. These free events are a great way to make your visit both fun and educational—check the park calendar before you go!

5. Fish in One of the Park's Lakes

With multiple fishing piers and lakes, Brazos Bend is a great place to introduce kids to fishing. The park participates in Texas Parks and Wildlife’s “Tackle Loaner Program,” so you can borrow rods and reels if you don’t have your own. 6. Visit the George Observatory

The George Observatory inside the park is part of the Houston Museum of Natural Science, one of the best science museums in Houston for kids. It offers one of the largest public telescopes in the U.S. and hosts star parties and astronomy programs. This is an activity for the night owls in the family as, obviously, it needs to be dark to see the stars, so programs can start late in the evening.

7. Explore the Nature Center

The park’s Nature Center is packed with hands-on exhibits and live animal displays that kids will love. It's a great place to cool off, especially on hot Texas afternoons, and offers a deeper look at the local ecosystems. Inside, you’ll find snakes, baby alligators, turtles, and other critters safely housed in aquariums and enclosures. There are also educational displays about the area's native wildlife, habitats, and conservation efforts, making it a great learning stop during your visit. Staff and volunteers are often available to answer questions and share cool facts—perfect for curious young explorers. If you're lucky, you might even catch an animal feeding demonstration or impromptu show-and-tell with one of the resident reptiles.

8. Go Geocaching

If your family enjoys scavenger hunts, try geocaching in Brazos Bend! Download a GPS-enabled app and search for hidden treasures throughout the park. It’s a great way to turn a hike into a fun game for kids.

9. Bike the Trails

With miles of mostly flat terrain, biking is a fun way to explore Brazos Bend. Bring your bikes and cruise around the park’s extensive trail system. Two great trails for biking with kids are the Elm Lake Loop and the 40-Acre Lake Trail. Both are relatively flat, wide, and scenic, making them perfect for beginners or younger riders who want to cruise while spotting wildlife along the way.

10. Have a Picnic by the Lake

No trip to a state park is complete without a picnic. There are tons of shady picnic areas with tables and grills near the lakes, perfect for a relaxing lunch or dinner after a busy morning on the trails. Bring sandwiches, snacks, and don’t forget bug spray!
