Swine flu: Rumors and misinformation have been circulating about the swine flu in NYC. I have heard people saying that 100 or 200 kids have it and people concerned about sending their kids to school. Here are the facts according to the Center for Disease Control.

The facts: 8 kids in Queens who may have traveled to Mexico over Spring Break developed mild cases of swine flu. None of them became seriously ill and they have all recovered.

What you can do: All that said, of course, as parents we feel the need to do something to protect our children. The best thing we can do is follow the basic rules of hygiene we follow all the time:

Washing hands with soap and water and using hand cleaners like Purell

Covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and throwing the tissue in the trash after you use it

Avoiding close contact with sick people

Staying home from work or school if you get sick

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

Stay informed: The CDC has set up a swine flu website. On it find information about the swine flu, the number of U/S/ human cases and other useful information.

Net net: Use common sense, wash your hands and if you hear crazy stories about dozens of cases, check the CDC website to get the facts.

In other news: A woman gave birth to a pair of twins on 5th Avenue to the cheers of passing traffic. And you thought getting a semi-private hostpital room was bad.

NBC reports on the increase of involuntary stay at home dads due to the economy and how they are coping.

This Sunday is Lemonade Day, a day dedicated to encouraging the next generation of entrepreneurs. Sign up for a helpful kit for your kids to set up a lemonade stand.

The Village Voice shares some little known secrets of the American Museum of Natural History. Apparently the artists that create the dioramas have had a little bit of fun. Find out where you can see Dr. Zaius's (from Planet of the Apes) profile in a pile of elephant dung, a cartoon salamander in the coral reef and more secret finds.

Due to funding shortages, the Bronx Zoo is facing layoffs...of the animals. The zoo is closing four exhibits, including The World of Darkness.
