The truth is that starting in Preschool (or daycare) we lose the ability to know everything about what happens to our children and as they get older this only increases to the point where by the time they are in Middle or High School they are actively seeking to withhold much of their lives from their parents. That is a painful realization for parents who have put so much into their children and want to keep the close bond that we form when our children are little. The internet has created a new kind of playground where kids can meet without leaving home. Children go online to interact in a private world and community that we can not be a part of and that is WHY they do. On the positive side, if you are reading this blog you are probably more cyber-smart yourself than many parents who really don't understand what kids are doing online and haven't ever heard of Facebook. Understanding what our kids are doing online will help us keep tabs and recognize if there is a problem. But,  all parents will have to teach their children some cyber-citizenship in order to keep them safe and internet-savvy. Rachel Dretzin, the show's director and producer, recommends a site called Wired Safety as a resource to help teach parents and children more about how to teach kids to use the internet safely and smartly. No matter how old your children are right now, it's worth thinking about this a little bit (not panicking) to educate ourselves on what we need to be aware of and how we can teach our kids to be cyber-savvy. Hey we teach them how to hail cabs and know the differene between real and fake handbags. Cyber-smarts is just another tool for slick city kids. Growing Up Online will premier on Frontline tonight, Tuesday January 22nd at 9PM and will be available to download and view after it airs from the Frontline website. The site also promises to have more resources for parents to learn about cyber-citizenship and online safety.
