The Long Island Museum provides cultural and educational experiences for people of all ages featuring compelling exhibitions and programs designed to engage the community and enhance the museum’s position as a cultural destination. The LIM is the only Smithsonian Affiliate on Long Island and one of just 212 affiliates nationwide.
The collections of the LIM number over 50,000 objects of national and international importance and reflect the art, history, and culture of 19th to 21st-century America.
The complex comprises nine acres with three modern museum buildings: a Visitor Center/History Museum, an Art Museum which includes two changing exhibition galleries, the Carriage Museum which is home to the finest collection of American horse-drawn transportation artifacts in the nation, and four historic structures, including a one-room schoolhouse and a blacksmith shop.

Education & Programming
Over 25,500 visitors enjoy the LIM annually. The museum’s audience includes both Long Island residents and seasonal tourists, participating in programs for adults, senior citizens, families, and children. Programs include workshops, family festivals, concerts, lectures, guided tours, and demonstrations. In addition, interactive education programs provide hands-on experiences that promote a love of learning and appreciation for the value of objects as keys to the past to students each year.

Children's Program
Programs for children continue well beyond formal field trips. Throughout the year, children can participate in a variety of history, artmaking, and gallery-based programs which enhance their understanding of gallery objects and themes, creating stronger connections to the Museum at large.

Summer Camps

Scheduled during school vacation days and summer break, programs engage students in art, reading, and creativity. These classes draw their inspiration from various authors, artists, illustrators, and current exhibitions.

Hands-on History & Hands-on Art

Afterschool classes give children a gallery and art-making experience that changes to coincide with the themes of current exhibitions.
