Talk Like a Pirate Day, Grandparents' Day, and more Holidays & Activities for September 2024
September means summer is in the rearview, and thoughts turn to school, apple picking, colorful leaves, and more fall fun.
One of my favorite ways to pick something new and fun to do on any given day is to celebrate a holiday! There are national days and holidays just about every day of the year, and it can be fun to take inspiration from them to plan an outing, craft, activity, treat, or game in honor of a silly holiday. September is home to National Playdough Day (below we've got an easy recipe to make your own) and Friday the 13th (read on for 13 ways to celebrate!), and so much more.
Check this list, and you’ll find the perfect thing to do with your kids each and every day. And if you're planning a fall getaway, check our travel guides to our favorite gorgeous fall family destinations in our travel guides to New England, the Poconos, and Maine.

September 2 – Labor Day
Happy Labor Day! Fun fact: Labor Day was declared a national holiday by Congress in 1894 to honor the nation's workers. It’s become a long weekend that officially marks the transition from summer to back-to-school and fall.
Lots of families take an annual camping trip this weekend; whether you’re in the woods or at home, it’s a fun time to make a campfire (or light some candles!) and sing some funny campfire songs.

My Grandma, who was a nurse, taught me how to make my bed with hospital corners. Now I have a simple duvet to just pull up! However you make your bed, teach your kids and then go around the house making everyone’s bed look shipshape. Then see how many days in a row everyone can make their beds. It’s a great habit you can’t start too soon.
September 12 – Chocolate Milkshake Day
Make a milkshake for an after-school snack or dessert. Load it up with whipped cream, sprinkles, and even a cherry on top!
September 13 – Friday the 13th
Today is Friday the 13th! Here are 13 fun ways to celebrate:
-
Wear blue; it’s considered a lucky color that gives protection from evil!
-
Order a baker's dozen (13) of donuts for breakfast.
-
Watch a scary (or ever so slightly spooky) movie.
-
Go to the 13th floor of a nearby building. Did you know many buildings skip the 13th floor?
-
Go to the park or your backyard and hunt for a four-leaf clover.
-
Bury 13 pennies in the ground; it’s supposed to bring good luck with money!
-
Knock wood!
-
Find a penny, pick it up, all the day you’ll have good luck. Go on a penny hunt outside!
-
If you can catch a leaf as it falls from a tree, before it hits the ground, you can make a wish on it. Good thing it’s autumn and leaves are falling!
-
Take on some beginners' luck, by trying a game you’ve never played.
-
Throw a party and invite 13 guests (stuffed animals or pets definitely count to help make up the numbers!).
-
